The 14 generations
Our earliest known ancestor is progenitor of 14 generations and at this moment we know of more than 2500 of his descendants. They all use surnames such as Ruiter, De Ruiter, Ruijter or Ruyter and for the most part still live in the northern part of the Netherlands, especially in the Overijssel and Friesland provinces. Around the beginning of the 20th century a number of families have emigrated to the United States. These households have now become large families. Later, still more emigrations took place; to Canada, South Africa and Australia. During all these centuries Ruiters have worked with and in the peat - mostly as peat diggers or makers of peat bricks, but they also include a few supervisors. |
