Where does our family come from?
In the early 1600s the area around Blokzijl was a booming place with an influx of many new inhabitants, mostly from the province of Noord-Holland. Blokzijl was a fortress manned by Dutch troops in the Spanish controlled north of the country. Especially Enkhuizen and Blokzijl were in close contact - in a military sence as well as economically through trade. It is at this time that our ancestor Jan Jans Ruijter makes an appearance in Blokzijl. In Overijssel the use of surnames was highly unusual, as opposed to Noord-Holland. The surname Ruiter is still quite common in Noord-Holland, with a high concentration around ... Enkhuizen. |
