Is it Ruiter or De Ruiter?
|
There can hardly be any misunderstanding : our ancestor's name was Jan Jans Ruyter. But when his son Wieger Jans was baptized in 1652 the name is spelled as Ruijter. For the most part of our family the surname was officially recorded in the Civil Register as Ruiter and also as De Ruiter. But there are also families around that use the surnames Ruijter or Ruyter (or even De Ruyter). Whatever seemed right to the clerk at that time was the way it was entered in the books, because there was no standard spelling. Different surnames but one big family! |
